In 2011, Madrid was declared a Fairtrade Town in the International Campaign of Fairtrade Towns.

It is the third largest city in the country, and is famous for its attractive natural and historical attractions. The main economic areas of the city are trade, services, financial, scientific and educational function. The city went through a heavy industrial revolution in the last period which resulted in severe impacts on the environment.
